Safety
Can a competitor end up with your data?
The fear is simple: a rival gets your quotes, your pricing or your client list. A properly drafted license should stop that happening directly, and certain buyers pledge they will never pass data to a rival. The real risks are quieter and worth understanding.
01
Three routes to a rival
- 1The dataset is resold. Some standard terms let the buyer sublicense. Without a limit on who, your records could reach a party you would never have chosen.
- 2The model learns the method. Your data trains or tests models that anyone can use, including competitors. After learning from thousands of your quotes, a model may quote better in your trade, though it never reveals the files themselves.
- 3Something slips through cleaning. Buyers replace client names, but supplier names, prices and margins may not count as personal data and can survive the scrub.
02
What buyers promise
The promises vary. Some say data is never sold to your competitors. Others restrict it to AI developers listed in your contract, promise never to name you without written permission, or commit to protecting trade secrets. Plenty say nothing in public, so put the question to them.
03
Four ways to close the door
- Hold back what gives you an edge: pricing spreadsheets, bid comparisons, margin reports and anything a competitor would love to read
- Limit sublicensing to named AI labs in the contract
- Ask for a written no-competitor clause
- Review the cleaned sample yourself for prices, supplier names and margins before release

FAQ
Questions, answered
Could a rival end up buying my records?
Some buyers pledge not to, though not every one says so publicly. Get that promise in the contract and limit onward licensing to named labs.
Can a competitor get my data out of an AI model?
Your files never come out of the model. What it picks up is the method, and that is what the license sells. Leave out anything that gives you an advantage.
Do I get told who receives my records in the end?
Only where the contract requires it, so ask for the recipients to be named.
Does licensing records weaken trade secret protection?
It can if the license is loose. Ask your lawyer to check confidentiality and use limits before signing.
