Can you sell your company's data directly to OpenAI or Anthropic?

It is natural to want a famous lab as your buyer instead of an unknown advertiser. In practice that door is mostly closed: the labs' public deals are with publishers and platforms, and trading businesses get to them through the licensors that feed them data.

01

The labs' published deals are with publishers

  • OpenAI with News Corp

    $250M+ across five years

  • OpenAI with Axel Springer

    Roughly $13M annually

  • Financial Times and OpenAI

    $5M to $10M a year

  • Reddit and Google

    About $60M a year

So far the only exception was a bankruptcy: Google bid $10M straight for Spirit Airlines' internal archive. A court-run sale of an airline is not a path open to most owners.

02

How business records reach labs

A licensor takes a copy of your records and then licenses that copy on to labs. micro1 has put $1B behind this for 12 months, and MIT Technology Review has described labs and their suppliers buying closed startups' archives. Plenty of licensors keep the end lab confidential, while some write the recipients into your contract. Always ask.

03

What labs' suppliers ask for

The day-to-day trail of a working business: inboxes and calendars, Slack or Teams chat, shared drives, CRM and billing, tickets and project boards, plus written procedures. The usual floor is 20 to 30 staff, though a few buyers have none.
