That old company mailbox now has buyers. What changed
Old mail used to be nothing more than a storage bill. AI firms now rank it near the top of their wish lists, because it is where quotes get negotiated, complaints get handled and decisions get made.
If you are about to purge mailboxes to free up space, it helps to know first what shifted in the market and why some archives fetch more than others.

Genuine company mail was almost never available
Very little corporate email ever goes public. Enron is the well-known case: investigators at the US energy regulator released roughly 500,000 messages written by around 150 of its staff. For a long time, that single failed company supplied much of what researchers knew about how offices really write to each other.
Everyone else's mail stayed locked away, and that rarity is the reason your archive draws interest now.

The 2026 shift
MIT Technology Review reported that labs, short on new high-quality text, turned their attention to corporate archives. Some of the resulting bids made the news.

Buyers have also cut the effort involved. A number of them can link straight to Gmail or Outlook, and email features on most of their published lists.

Why email teaches so well
Each thread is a short episode. A customer wants a price, the estimator replies, the customer objects, a manager settles it. An AI agent needs to learn to handle exactly that sequence.
Difficult threads carry the most weight. Surge AI says it favours archives that capture friction and tough calls, so a quiet, routine inbox fetches less than one full of problems that had to be solved.
04
Factors that move the price
- Headcount and history usually push it up. Sunset prices on staff numbers, years trading, volume and how the team used its systems.
- Language counts for some buyers; micro1's estimator asks what share of your records are in English.
- Customer personal information pulls value down unless it can be removed dependably, and no removal process is flawless.
- A defined scope speeds things up: agree early which mailboxes are included and which are not.
05
Next steps
A firm of 30 to 50 people holding mail back to 2015 or earlier may be sitting on one of its most valuable record sets. Hold off on any purge. If the business is closing, keep paying for the workspace until you have decided, because expired accounts are wiped.
FAQ
Questions, answered
Can old company email really be sold?
Yes, in some cases. Spirit Airlines' archive drew a $10M offer from Google, and Cielo24's Slack, Jira and email history (13 years of it) reportedly fetched a few hundred thousand dollars.
Is email priced per message?
No. Buyers price the whole company package, which by their own figures usually runs $100K to $2M for a business still trading. Closed startups tend to get $10K to $100K.
Will a person read our mail?
Buyers clean it first, often with automated tools or a specialist scrubbing firm. Several say names are stripped or turned into codes before anything else happens.
How much history do buyers look for?
The longer the better. Nyne sets a three-year minimum, and micro1's estimator asks how far your records go back.
Should we stop deleting mail?
If licensing is a possibility, yes. SimpleClosure warns that a closing company's data loses value fast.
