Managed service providers: licensing tickets and runbooks

Managed service providers build up years of tickets, runbooks, onboarding lists and escalation notes. Each records an issue, its cause and the fix, written by people whose job is documentation. AI companies license copies of exactly this.

01

What a buyer wants from an MSP

Incident tickets, change requests, runbooks, onboarding lists and escalations. When a ticket links to the change that resolved it, the buyer sees the full job from first report to fix. Your PSA already links tickets, changes and time entries.

02

Client details are all through your tickets

Tickets mention client staff, servers, IP ranges and now and then passwords. Some buyers refuse anything you hold for clients, and the others strip names, account numbers and credentials first. Check your client contracts with a lawyer: an MSP's archive may be mostly client-held data.

03

Is the MSP big enough?

Buyers typically set a floor of 20 to 30 employees, though a few have no minimum, which is good news for a team of 12. Certain buyers only count US-based office employees, so offshore technicians may not count.

04

What it could pay

Nobody quotes a figure specific to MSPs. For businesses still trading, buyers advertise roughly $100K to $2M (self-reported). It helps that support tickets rank among the record types buyers ask for most.

05

How much of your time it takes

Less than most owners expect. By the buyers' own estimates the owner's part is roughly 1 to 3 hours: a scoping call, deciding what is in and out, and approving the export. The buyer can usually work with your IT person or provider on the export itself.

FAQ

Questions, answered

Is my company big enough?

Buyers typically set a floor of 20 to 30 employees and want three-plus years of records. A handful have no minimum, and a few only count staff in US offices.

Can I license tickets that mention client systems?

Possibly, after client details and credentials are removed, and only if your client contracts allow it.

What software do buyers pull from?

Help desk tools like Zendesk, Jira and ServiceNow come up by name, and most buyers can use a PSA export instead.
