Selling an advisory book? How your practice works is a separate asset

A successor buys your households, your assets under management and your relationships. What they rarely pay for is the record of how your practice does the work: planning workflows, review meeting prep, service requests and the templates your team has refined for years.

AI companies license records like these, with client information stripped out. Whether your practice qualifies mostly comes down to size.

In this guide

01

The work, not the households

  • Planning and review workflows, checklists and templates
  • Service request handling, from paperwork to follow-up
  • Internal procedures, compliance checklists and training material
  • Email and CRM activity, with client details removed

02

Is my practice big enough?

The typical floor is 20 to 30 staff, with a handful of buyers setting none. A lone adviser passing clients to a successor seldom qualifies. A multi-adviser RIA joining an aggregator frequently does.

03

Client accounts are the line

Balances, account numbers, tax files and life details all belong to clients. Buyers state that client-held data stays out, personal details get removed, and entire systems can be excluded. Several buyers list insurance and financial services as targets, yet none has posted a price for an advisory practice. Broad published bands sit mostly at $100K to $2M.

Timing is everything in a handover. Practices that transition clients over one or two years usually run their own CRM and email until the last day, so start the conversation while you still control them.

Questions to put to any data buyer

  • Is this a license of a copy, or a sale of the records outright?
  • Is it exclusive, and for how long? Can I license the same data elsewhere later?
  • Which systems and date ranges are in scope, and can I leave folders or whole tools out?
  • Who removes names and personal details, how, and do I approve a sample before anything leaves?
  • When does payment arrive, and does the clock start at signing or at your acceptance of the delivery?
  • Do I pay anything, and does anyone in the chain take a cut?
  • How long do you keep the copy, and what happens to it if you are acquired?

FAQ

Questions, answered

Does a license raise the price of my book?

No. Your successor sets the book price. Any data license is a separate number.

Do AI companies want advisory firm data?

Several buyers list financial services as a target. Nobody has published an advisory-practice deal so far.

Is my company big enough?

The usual floor is somewhere from 20 to 30 staff. Some buyers publish none at all. Mode accepts law firms with 6 people and accounting firms with 10, and Pewter goes by your highest-ever headcount. Our match quiz sorts it out in two minutes.

Would client account details be included?

Buyers say no. Client information is excluded or stripped before anything is licensed. Confirm it in writing.

Can an adviser license client notes under privacy rules such as Reg S-P?

That is a compliance question. Speak with your compliance officer or counsel before sharing any sample.
