Closing your company
Shutting down? Keep paying for Slack, Google Workspace and GitHub
Every subscription looks like wasted money during a shutdown, so Slack, Google Workspace and GitHub tend to be first in line for cancellation.
Wait. Each of them wipes accounts that stop paying, and the record buyers pay for disappears too.

At most startups, decisions, documents and code all live in those three accounts. A buyer has to be able to sample them, and Pewter, which buys from closed US firms that peaked at 20+ staff, cautions that archives often get wiped during wind-downs.

What to keep running
- The paid Slack plan, so older history stays visible
- Google Workspace or Microsoft 365, at least one admin seat and all mailboxes
- GitHub or GitLab organization, with repositories intact
- Ticketing and CRM tools if they hold years of history
- One admin login you control after staff leave
You can usually cut seats or downgrade other tools. Ask each provider's support what happens to data on downgrade before you change plans.
03
How long, and is it worth it
Keep accounts until a buyer has reviewed the data or you decide not to sell. SimpleClosure advises starting buyer outreach alongside the dissolution filing, so this is usually weeks, not months.
Weigh a few months of subscriptions against typical wind-down deals of $10K to $100K. If an account has already lapsed, ask support immediately whether it can be restored.
FAQ
Questions, answered
What happens to Slack data if I stop paying?
Paid features lapse and older history can become hidden or deleted. Workspaces left unpaid can be removed. Check Slack's current policy before cancelling.
Should I export everything instead?
Exports help as a backup, but many buyers prefer read-only access to the live system, and some data does not export cleanly.
My workspace already lapsed. Is it gone?
Not always. Contact the provider's support quickly and ask whether it can be restored.
