Spirit Airlines
What's in Spirit Airlines' data archive
Spirit Airlines is the largest public example of a company archive offered to AI buyers. The court filings describe a Microsoft 365 estate: email, Teams, OneDrive, SharePoint and employee records.
If you are sizing up your own company's records, this is the clearest inventory available.

01
The record counts
~100M
emails across 80,000 accounts
Flight attendants' objection, Dkt. 1489
500M
Teams items
Dkt. 1489
175,658
employee records dating from 1986
Dkt. 1489
The filing also lists 17,082,644 OneDrive items and 20,577,677 SharePoint items. Press figures differ slightly: MIT Technology Review rounds the employee records to 176,000.
Spread over 80,000 mailboxes, 100M emails comes to roughly 1,250 each. That figure is our own calculation, and real mailboxes vary a lot: managers and schedulers send far more than seasonal workers.
02
Five datasets Google agreed to drop
On 2026-09-09 Google dropped passenger name records, transaction data, refunds, onboard and inflight sales, timecards and WiFi revenue from the deal, and its price stayed at $10.0M.
Those sets were the customer and payroll material. Because the price stayed put, the value seems to sit in the messages and documents. Several parties pushed for further cuts: flight attendants asked to be left out, International Aero Engines argued its confidential files belong to it and not the estate, and the pilots' union warned that safety-program records could identify individual pilots.
03
Why buyers pay for an airline's inbox
Passenger lists hold little appeal for AI buyers. What they pay for is the record of how work moves: requests, escalations, decisions. The buyers' published wish lists confirm it: process documents, project history, email, chat and CRM activity.
For Spirit, the de-identification method weighed about as heavily as the dollar figure. The ombudsman's support depends on Tonic.ai signing off on the removal of personal data ahead of every handover. See de-identification in data sales.
04
Comparing your own records
Most companies hold a tiny share of what Spirit had, and prices reflect that: through SimpleClosure, wind-down data sales typically fetch $10K to $100K. The software is the same, though: Slack or Teams, Google Workspace or Microsoft 365, Jira and a CRM.
